Grande Masonry and Horan Bldg. (Middletown) were involved in a tight well-pitched, well-played back and forth ballgame in Sunday afternoon action at Cardines Field in Newport. Horan entered the 7th inning up by one run and tacked on another after the first batter of the inning was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a pitch to the backstop, then scored on a hit to left field making the score 5-3. Grande had final at-bats and made the most of the opportunity.
With one out clean-up hitter Mike Sherman smashed a ball deep into the triangle in center field for a long double. Michael Gabriel followed with a sharp single to left center field and promptly stole second base. A hit batsman loaded the bases for Bennett Mallinson who hit a ball to deep short for an infield hit, scoring Sherman to make the score 5-4. Thomas Kyros then came to bat and drove a ball well over the right fielder's head, driving in Gabriel and Cal Mahoney with the exciting game-winning walk-off hit!
Grande had taken an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after consecutive singles by Zach Sherman and John Bliss, followed by a 2-run double from Tommy McSparren. They tacked on another run in the 5th inning with a clutch 2-out RBI single from Tom McGraw.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher Bliss (who pitched into the sixth inning) and reliever McSparren combined to effectively limit Horan to seven hits while striking out eight.
