Grande overcomes early 5-run deficit to win big vs. K of C

UpdatedThursday August 13, 2020 byWBB.

In their first action of the season at the Cardines Field ballpark (on a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon in Newport), Grande Masonry roared back after allowing five runs to Knights of Columbus (Middletown) in the first two innings, eventually tying the game in the middle innings at five apiece and then breaking it open late to win by eight runs, 13-5.  This was their third time scoring 10 or more runs so far this season.

Offensively, Tommy McSparren led Grande with four hits (including two triples) and two RBIs while lead-off hitter John Bliss reached base all four times with three hits (including a double), an RBI and multiple runs.  Bennett Mallinson chipped in with two hits and an RBI.  Team Grande left few runners on base by capitalizing on many RBI opportunities, sometimes without benefit of a base hit.

The Grande pitching was also the big story of the day, with only one run being allowed after the first inning.  Effective relief work by McSparren and Mallinson (two innings apiece) from the 2nd through the 5th inning held the K of C bats in check.  Zach Sherman then recorded three straight outs against the top of their order in the 7th inning to finish the game in Grande's favor.  Twelve K of C batters were retired by a strikeout, with pitcher McSparren alone getting five outs via the "K".  In addition, Grande pitchers allowed just 5 base hits and 3 walks.  Solid defense permitted just one K of C unearned run on the day.
