Grande bests K of C in late game comeback
1st competitive team action @ Seveney in pre-season scrimmageUpdatedThursday May 4, 2017 byWilliam Bliss.
Under bright sunny skies and with mid-50's temperatures spring season Babe Ruth baseball got underway at Seveney Field this Sunday with scrimmage action between Portsmouth's Grande Masonry and the Knights of Columbus of Middletown. Grande prevailed in the 7 inning contest, rallying from a 5-1 deficit, eventually going up 6-5 on a 2-run double (and eventual game-winning hit) by Teagan Brady (filling in from Team Ferreira's).
Tommy McSparren helped fuel Grande's comeback earlier with a stand-up triple to deep right field - then scoring on a wild pitch. Thomas Kyros had a defensive gem while playing 2B, jumping up and spearing a hard-struck line drive, then quickly tossing to SS McSparren for an inning-ending double play at second base. In addition, catcher TJ Bettencourt (on loan from N.E. Pizza) threw out a runner attempting to steal third base, snuffing out a mid-game K of C rally. Five Grande pitchers combined to contribute effective mound work, including Michael Gabriel (two innings), Teagan Brady (two innings, including striking out the side in the 3rd inning), Bennett Mallinson, "Big Mike" Sherman and closer Tommy McSparren.
Every hitter in the Grande line-up made solid contact during the game -- great to see so early in the season. First regular season game action for Grande begins Sunday April 30 at 10am on Seveney Field vs. Portsmouth's R&R Construction team.
